EFFECT OF APPLYING NITROGEN AND PHOSPHORUS-IMPREGNATED BIOCHAR ON SOME CHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF ANDISOL SOIL

Resumo

Acidic soils present significant challenges to global agricultural productivity. Biochar (BC) could potentially mitigate these issues with its "liming effect" and efficient use of agricultural waste. However, BC's variable effects on plant-soil responses and its low nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) content can sometimes reduce soil nutrient levels. Using a controlled release mechanism, BC impregnated with N and P could be an alternative. This study evaluated N and P availability in an Andisol upon application of a synthesized fertilizer based on biochar and enriched with N and P (BC-NP), compared with conventional nutrient sources. The biochar, derived from oat residues, was impregnated with urea and diammonium phosphate. The resulting product (BC-NP) was analyzed for N and P content, and an incubation experiment was conducted. The samples were incubated at 25°C and 80% humidity for 60 days. Controls included urea, diammonium phosphate, a combination of the two, and unfertilized soil. Concentrations of NH4+-N, NO3--N, and P, along with exchangeable and extractable Al levels, were determined at several intervals. Results showed BC-NP produced intermediate NH4+-N concentrations in the first half of the experiment, but these peaked in the final two samplings. NO3--N concentrations increased gradually but lagged behind those achieved by N+P mineral fertilization. Notably, BC-NP-treated soil maintained significantly higher P concentrations throughout. In-plant trials will supplement these findings, evaluating the impact of this biochar-based, controlled-release fertilizer on the soil-plant-microorganism system, contributing to the development of sustainable strategies for crop production in acidic soils.
